Ashes Whitewash β€” How to Play

The Goal

Build an all-time Ashes XI by drafting players from Ashes history (1970–present), then beat the All-Stars opposition 5–0 in a five-match Test series. A draw or series loss means you'll need a stronger team next time.

How it works
1
Choose your side
Pick England, Australia, or the combined All-Stars mode β€” which draws from both nations' histories.
2
Spin the wheel 11 times
Each spin reveals six player options for a specific position. Every option shows the player's name, era, role, and rating. Pick one to fill that slot. You can't pick the same player twice.
3
Play in the right position
Players placed in their natural position perform at full ability. A pace bowler batting at No.3, or a batter in the spinner slot, will carry a significant rating penalty. A ⚠ out of position warning appears on mismatches.
4
Win the toss, play the series
Before each Test you toss a coin. Win it and choose to bat or bowl first. The match simulates four innings of ball-by-ball commentary β€” boundaries, wickets, milestones, and scorecards included. Skip any innings at any time.
5
Win all five Tests
You need a 5–0 series win β€” the perfect whitewash. Anything less and you'll need to rethink your draft. Watch out for injuries between Tests, which can force you to field a replacement.
The 11 positions

Your XI is built in batting order. Each spin targets a specific role β€” here's what each slot expects and who fits best.

Slots 1–2
Opening Batters
Face the new ball. Needs technique and temperament. Pure batters and bat/WK hybrids only β€” bowlers here take a big rating hit.
Slot 3
No.3 Batter
Often the best batter in the side. Comes in early if an opener falls. Batters and all-rounders both fit here naturally.
Slots 4–5
Middle-order Batters
Consolidate and build. Batters, keepers, and all-rounders are all natural here. Bowlers batting at 4 or 5 will underperform badly.
Slot 6
All-rounder
Must contribute with both bat and ball. An all-rounder here plays at full strength. A batter or bowler in this slot loses half their secondary skill.
Slot 7
Wicketkeeper
Keeps wicket and bats in the lower middle order. Only WK and WK/Bat players fill this naturally. A batter here keeps adequately but a bowler here is nearly useless.
Slots 8–10
Fast Bowlers
Your pace attack. Pace bowlers and all-rounders fit here. Batting contribution is expected to be low β€” these players are judged almost entirely on their bowling.
Slot 11
Spinner
The specialist spin option. Spin bowlers and all-rounders belong here. A pacer in the spinner slot loses significant bowling effectiveness.
All modes
⚠ Out of position
A red warning flag appears when a player doesn't suit the slot. Their effective bat or bowl rating is reduced β€” sometimes severely. Use it strategically or avoid it.
Player ratings & eras

Every player has a rating (overall quality), plus separate bat, bowl, and keep scores. Crucially, the same player appears at different ratings across different Ashes periods β€” Joe Root 2019–23 (95) is significantly stronger than Joe Root 2013–15 (82). Knowing when a player peaked is as important as knowing who they are.

Hard mode
Ratings are hidden throughout the draft and team comparison screen. On top of that, each spin deliberately includes two impostors β€” high-profile players from the wrong role category mixed in among the four correct options. You might see Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne offered as openers, or Boycott appearing in your pace bowling slot. Pick on cricket knowledge alone.
Match simulation

Each Test is simulated ball by ball across four innings. The stronger your batting against the opposition's bowling β€” and vice versa β€” the better your team performs. Watch for:

50
Milestones
A toast pops up when a batter reaches 50 or 100, or a wicket falls β€” with the bowler and dismissal type.
SC
Scorecards
After each innings, a full batting and bowling scorecard shows every player's contribution β€” runs, balls, fours, sixes, and wickets.
⭐
Player of the Match
The standout performer from your XI is named after each Test. Earn it five times and you're the Player of the Series.
πŸš‘
Injuries
A 15% chance after each Test that a player is injured and replaced by a backup for the next match. Keep your squad depth in mind.
Squad rotation

After each of the first four Tests, you get the chance to refresh your squad before the next match.

1
Two spins
You get two rotation spins between each Test. Each spin reveals a single player from the available pool β€” one option, take it or leave it.
2
Swap or keep
The new player shows which slot they'd fill and who they'd replace. Hit Swap in to make the change, or Keep current to pass and use your second spin on someone else.
3
Injury replacements
If a player was injured in the previous Test, a red alert appears on the rotation screen. The spin pool is weighted toward same-role replacements. If you don't make a change, the game selects a backup automatically.
4
Tactical flexibility
Use rotation to bring in a specialist for a particular venue β€” a spinner for a turning pitch, an extra pacer for a green top, or simply to upgrade a weaker slot if a better option appears.
Leaderboard & scoring

Every completed series is scored and saved to your personal leaderboard. Points are awarded as follows:

Wins
100 pts per Test win
Each Test victory in the series earns 100 points.
Whitewash
+300 bonus
A perfect 5–0 series earns a 300-point bonus on top of the 500 for five wins.
Series win
+50 bonus
Winning the series (regardless of margin) adds 50 points.
Stats
Runs & wickets
Top scorer's runs Γ· 10, plus top wicket-taker's wickets Γ— 5 are added to your total.
Hard mode
Γ—1.5 multiplier
Every point earned in Hard mode is multiplied by 1.5 β€” making it significantly more valuable than a Normal mode run.
